The story revolves around Rima, a Muslim girl from Tunisia who lost her parents. Her mother's last words to her Jewish neighbor, Yaacoub, were to raise her according to Islamic principles. As the girl grew up and started wearing the hijab, she began to see Yaacoub as a stranger. At that point, his wife Tanya demanded that he choose between her and Rima, whom he loved as his own daughter. He sent Rima to his sister Rachel in Lebanon, complicating matters when Rima had to move again due to ill-treatment from Rachel's husband. She then lived with Rachel's friend, Sonya, who was also from Tunisia but had fled her abusive husband with her two daughters, Nada and Dana, to the city of Qana in Lebanon. Thus, everyone's fates become intertwined in a complex whirlwind.
